Presently, we are geared up for a potential monkey pox outbreak in the country. We have investigated outbreaks of zika, Nipah, and avian Influenza over the past year. ICMR-NIV was always in the forefront when it came to outbreaks and supported the state governments whether it was for Zika or Nipah. Timely diagnostic support has been provided for testing samples referred from different parts of the country. ICMR-NIV has reached new heights and received many laurels for the exemplary services rendered in the fightback against COVID-19.ĭespite the COVID-19 challenges, my colleagues carried out excellent research in their respective domains and produced quality work output. We continue to isolate the new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 as well as monitor the neutralizing antibody responses to these emerging variants in vaccinees as well as those who have had natural infection. The Institute also played an important role in the validation of reagents, test kits, and equipment as part of the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” program for COVID-19 diagnostics. ICMR-NIV also played a pivotal role in the procurement of reagents, formulation into real time PCR kit format and distribution of this kit to numerous COVID-19 testing laboratories in India. The anti-IgG SARS-CoV-2 ELISA ‘COVID KAVACH’ was another feather in the cap of ICMR-NIV that has found application in sero-surveillance studies throughout the country. We published the first whole genome sequences, the first electron micrograph and successfully isolated the virus for the first time in India.

This indigenous vaccine, COVAXIN®, was co-developed and evaluated at ICMR-NIV, Pune. The journey through the pandemic has been challenging, but ICMR-NIV was in the forefront and shouldered the responsibility right from reporting the first cases in India to the development of an indigenous efficacious vaccine. As the Director, I feel proud to announce the tremendous contribution the Institute has made as team NIV to the nation. It is indeed my pleasure and privilege to present a report of ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune, for the year 2021-22.
