The speaker is telling her to behave and stick to her friends, and the young girl does the exact opposite of this in the poem.

Persephone is portrayed to be a bit of a troublemaker, or at least someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy following the rules, as evidenced in the aside in the poem. Persephone herself, along with Hades, is another example of someone who doesn’t quite fit the mold. Any mortal mother would be expected to grieve after losing their child, whereas the Gods of Olympus are disturbed by how strongly Demeter reacts to her daughter’s disappearance. While Persephone’s relationship with Demeter is relatively typical of that of a normal mother and daughter, it doesn’t really fit in with the way Gods normally act towards their children.

The fact that the flower that Persephone goes to pick up, the narcissus, is so “unlike all the others” fit very well with the story for me, as it fits with the characters and the relationship between Persephone and her mother Demeter. In Rita Dove’s poem “Persephone, Falling” I couldn’t help but pick up on the first couple of lines. “To be, or not to be,” that is the cliché.Equivalent Exchange (there ya go, Sean).Extra credit if you actually read this beforehand.
